The Power of Home Organisation: How to Improve the Sale Potential of Your Home

Over the past few years, decluttering has shifted from being a private, slightly shameful task to a mainstream movement. Popular TV shows such as Sort Your Life Out have sparked honest conversations about the simple truth: most of us own too much stuff, and many of us don’t know where to start when it comes to dealing with it.

For Edinburgh-based organiser Zoë Berry, this realisation became the spark for Life Edit, which she founded seven years ago. Since then, her team has grown into Scotland’s largest group of professional home organisers, working everywhere from city-centre flats to sprawling country homes across Edinburgh, the Lothians, the Borders, Fife and Perthshire.

Why clutter weighs us down

Clutter builds up for all sorts of reasons: sentimentality, busy family life, lack of time, or even the emotional challenge of sorting through belongings after a loss. Whatever the cause, the effect is often the same, feeling overwhelmed. A cluttered environment can make us feel stressed, stuck and unable to fully enjoy our homes.

This is where Zoë and her team can step in. They don’t just clear cupboards or box up toys; they provide reassurance, structure and practical energy to help clients feel in control again. “Judgement-free, empathetic and enthusiastic” is how one client described them, turning what feels like an impossible job into a positive, even enjoyable experience.

From living well to selling well

Decluttering has benefits beyond day-to-day life. It can also play a major role in selling a property. Home staging, or preparing a house so that it appeals to the widest number of buyers, is a concept that’s long been embraced in the US and is now becoming more common in the UK.

It may seem counterintuitive to invest time and money in a home you’re about to leave behind, but the results speak for themselves. Homes that are staged not only achieve higher sale prices but can also sell up to three times faster than those left “as is.”

The challenge, of course, is that homeowners often stop noticing their own spaces. That’s where a professional perspective helps. By walking through your home as a potential buyer would, a staging expert can highlight quick win, like rearranging furniture, neutralising personal touches, or simply clearing surfaces, that make a huge difference in first impressions.

Zoë’s top tips for getting started

Decluttering can feel daunting, but small, simple steps can make a big difference. Here are some of Zoë’s favourite tips:

Start Small – Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to tackle the whole house at once. Begin with one drawer, one shelf, or one cupboard. Quick wins give you momentum.

Contain It – Use baskets, trays or boxes to group similar items together. Not only does it look tidier, but it makes things easier to find.

Be Honest – If you haven’t used it in the last year, or if it doesn’t make you smile, it may be time to let it go.

Label Everything – Labels keep the whole household on track. They also stop clutter creeping back in, especially in shared spaces like kitchens or playrooms.

Reset Regularly – Spend five minutes at the end of each day putting things back where they belong. Small resets prevent bigger messes later.

More than tidying up

Whether you’re preparing to move or simply craving a calmer, more organised living space, the lesson is clear: decluttering is about far more than tidiness. It’s about creating clarity, boosting wellbeing, and when it comes to property, maximising opportunity.

Over the past seven years, Zoë’s team has worked in every kind of space, from busy kitchens and overflowing playrooms to garages and lofts that felt impossible to tackle. With Scotland’s largest team of professional organisers, and a steady stream of 5-star reviews from hundreds of clients, Life Edit has shown that with the right support, even the most daunting projects can be turned into positive, uplifting transformations.

Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh edit to see your home in a whole new light.
